Speech Team competes at Sections on April 15th - Kreft headed to State

Coaches around the area were worried about being able to participate in Saturday’s section speech meet with everyone focused on the impending snowstorm.  Luckily, the weather moved south and students were able to get to Pillager, host of the Section 6A speech meet and vie for their chance to compete in the state tournament on Saturday, April 21st.

West Central Area brought 15 speakers speaking in various categories.  These speakers were; John Barber, Matthew Poyzer, Ava Jahnke, Ian Wittbrodt, Brianna Kreft, Makenna Prairie, Aaron Holmes, Emma Saulsbury, Isaac Kreft, Hannah Anderson, Tyler Biss, Spencer Engen, Emily Engen, Nathan Lewis and Sidney Kvam.  Each of these students gave polished pieces that they have been working on tirelessly since the beginning of January. They have given up countless Saturdays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, competing collectively against over 3,000 speakers throughout the season.  We are so very proud of the growth they have experienced throughout the season and the accomplishments they have achieved.

Five of our speakers earned the chance to speak in finals, a fourth round, in front of 3 judges with the top three speakers in each category advancing to the state tournament.  In visiting with each speaker after final round, they expressed that they had given their all, felt that they had given the best performance they could and would wait patiently to hear the results.  The results were John Barber 5th in discussion, Nathan Lewis 5th in poetry, Matthew Poyzer 5th in drama, Emily Engen 4th in storytelling and Brianna Kreft 3rd in extemporaneous reading. Section 6A is known to be very strong in speech and earning a medal in your category is a feat to be very proud of.

Brianna will return for her fourth state appearance in extemporaneous reading on Saturday.  She is excited and nervous. Returning as the current state champion has increased the pressure she puts on herself and she knows the competition will of course be very formidable.  Her goal was to make a return appearance to the state tournament. She says, “Anything from here on out is just gravy,” and is excited and up for the challenge.

We will very much miss the wonderful leadership and talent our seniors have provided. They are a solid group of great kids with amazing talents and we look forward to see where their lives lead.  We are excited for next year as we have many talented and enthusiastic underclassmen that will return to us.
