Mock Trial

Mock Trial season is underway! West Central Area’s two Mock Trial teams faced off against Albany at the Grant County Courthouse. Mock Trial is a statewide program in which high schools compete in a courtroom trial. Students throughout the state study the same hypothetical case.  Using this case, they work on brief and witness statements, conduct legal research, learn courtroom procedures, and prepare both the prosecution and defense sides of the case. The students portray each of the roles in a cast of courtroom characters including lawyers, witnesses, the bailiff, and the clerk. Each team competes in an actual courtroom presided over by a real judge and volunteer attorneys.

This year’s case “State V. Sam Soto” tackles the opioid epidemic, third-degree murder, addiction, and medical negligence.  The WCA Mock Trial team will compete again on January 30th at the Stevens County Courthouse and on February 5th in Wadena.

"This class is great preparation for college, and for speaking in front of others. Also, having the “power” to put someone in jail is pretty fun." Ellie Herman.
