The Present and Future are Bright at WCA

The West Central Area speech team spoke at the section 6A speech tournament in Pillager on Saturday, April 6th.  It was a great day with lots of experience gained and Nathan Lewis, a senior in poetry accomplished his goal of earning a trip to the state tournament with a third place finish.  70% of the team that qualified for sections are junior high students.  That is incredible!  Coach Kreft is very excited about what this means for the continued success of the WCA speech program.

Other highlights for the day included adding three letter winners to our roster; Ava Jahnke, Declan Johnson and Ian Wittbrodt.  Declan and Ian, as a new dramatic duo team finished right in the middle of the standings in a very competitive category.  Ava finished her season with a rank of first in her first round of prose.  Isaac Kreft just missed the cut to finals, tying for 6th which would have allowed him to speak in the final round, but then lost the tie breaker criteria.  Spencer Engen had a strong showing in informative, finishing in the middle of the standings.  When reading the critique sheets that the judges provide for our speakers, they were filled with positive comments of the strengths of our competitors and contained comments like, “You have so much potential.”  “You commanded the room.”  “I was thoroughly entertained by your piece.”  “We as coaches are so very proud of all that these speakers have accomplished this season and the growth they have made.  They are truly outstanding speakers and individuals.”

We are excited for Nathan’s trip to the state tournament, saddened that the speech season has ended for the rest of our speakers and look forward to next year’s season as we have so much potential talent in next year’s team.  We say thank-you to our outstanding seniors; Rose Borash, Emily Courrier, Cassie LeVecesque and Nathan Lewis as they have provided us much leadership and entertainment through the years.  They will be missed.
