Students in Ms. VanBlarcom’s transitions class went on an industry tour stopping at Leighton Broadcasting and Productive Alternatives in Fergus Falls.  Students learned different job skills needed at each of these businesses. They were able to meet radio personalities, see the behind-the-scenes, and find out what it takes to be an employee.  Kim Ottinger reported, “It is important to have people skills and character with your job”. At Productive Alternatives, students toured the production area and reflected on the skill set required for the job.  “It’s not about rushing, but doing your best”, stated Chance Hoberg. At Productive Alternatives, “They have things for me to do with limited mobility. I learned they can adapt,” spoke Dylan Hotovec.

In preparation of this field trip, students have been working diligently on various job tasks around the school.  With the support of the custodial staff, they have vacuumed rugs, sanitized and polished drinking fountains, collected, sorted recycling, took inventory and stocked custodial closets.  They have also examined and learned about job safety and are studying successful work attitudes and behaviors and are enjoying the important life lesson of the value of work.
