The Soils contest requires participants to know how to differentiate between the three soil horizons (layers), and how to determine: soil structure, soil texture, and soil color.  Participants also analyze slope and water permeability in order that they can recommend soil erosion prevention techniques as needed.  They also analyze previous crop use on the land and intended future crop use in order that they can recommend fertilizer and liming rates to achieve desired yield goals.  Finally, participants analyze the potential for using the soil for three options other than crop production: building a dwelling, installing a septic system, or installing a farm lagoon.
